Moving the Building Ecosystem

The construction sector is undergoing a fundamental shift, driven by climate targets, evolving regulation and growing resource scarcity. This calls for more than purely technical solutions.

In this community of practice, The Shift brings together businesses, public authorities and experts to actively shape the transition across the construction value chain. Because together we are stronger.

Green building reuse

Why participate?

The question is no longer whether the construction sector is changing, but how well we organise the transformation together. Because:

    European regulation is accelerating (CSRD, EPBD, CPR, EU Taxonomy), driving growing demand for innovation and forward-looking choices;

    the impact is shifting beyond energy alone to materials, the value chain and design choices;

    the construction sector is made up of many different actors, but emissions do not stop at the boundary of a contract or a role. The challenges are collective;

    individual optimisations have reached their limits, and traditional silos no longer work.

What to expect?

Together with peers from other sectors and with experts, we broaden our perspective and help one another to ask the right questions. We create a safe, trusted space that encourages the exchange of expertise, challenges and best practices.

We go beyond theory: the practical tools, exercises and strategies explored are designed to spark real change in practice.

Towards a resilient climate strategy for your organisation and its partners.

Programme

This programme offers a comprehensive view of what it takes to truly embed climate at the core of your organisation. Across six carefully structured sessions, you explore how to move step by step towards an effective climate strategy. You work in a hands-on way, alongside peers from other organisations facing similar questions, and with experts who broaden your perspective and deepen your approach.

The programme is bilingual: everyone speaks the language they feel most comfortable in, while presentations are delivered in English. This creates an open, accessible learning environment where knowledge-sharing is central – and where every organisation, regardless of sector or maturity, can make tangible progress.

Finance as a lever for change

What if money isn’t an end in itself, but a way to bring people closer together? For Koenraad Belsack, founder and co-CEO of Upgrade Estate, entrepreneurship starts with that simple idea.

Who is this for?

This community of practice brings together organisations that want to look beyond isolated actions and consider the entire value chain in their decisions, from design and materials to procurement and use. Participants get the most out of the journey when they are open to collaboration, learn from peers, and translate insights into action within their own organisation.

Are you active in the construction value chain as a developer, architect, contractor, builder or materials supplier? Are you looking to better understand where environmental impacts arise, align your teams and work with partners to reduce them? Our climate specialist and programme manager, John Dams, would be happy to provide further information.

What we stand for

Companies that proactively work to make their supply chains more sustainable or set up new, responsible chains deserve our wholehearted support. By investing in sustainable chains and sustainable trade relations, we not only boost our international credibility, but also the competitiveness of Belgian companies. The government can lead by example by purchasing in a socially responsible manner: sustainable public procurement is the catalyst we need for change.

“Circular renovation with the right partners makes our model stronger in the face of rising energy and material costs.” – Jean-Pierre Hanin, CEO Cofinimmo

Circularity as a motor of competitiveness

On Wednesday 3 September 2025, The Shift brought together several members from the construction and industrial sectors for a meeting with David Clarinval, Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy. The conversation centred on the economic and social advantages of a circular approach.
