Biodiversity

Woman in nature

More than half of global GDP is directly dependent on nature. This underscores the importance of working together to conserve and repair ecosystems, which are at the root of economic stability and growth.

Members of The Shift are putting in place strategies to protect biodiversity in accordance with international standards. They align their activities with global biodiversity targets established in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, identify potential risks, set measurable targets and take concrete steps towards nature restoration and conservation. The ultimate goal is to become “nature-positive”.

The Belgian government must set clear conditions for companies so that they actively contribute to promoting biodiversity. One way to do this is to set limits or taxes on the use of harmful substances, such as nitrogen and methane, and the use of pesticides. Moreover, companies should be obligated to be transparent about the impact of their activities on nature.

Furthermore, the government should actively encourage nature-inclusive solutions. These include bio-materials in the construction, textile and chemical sectors as a viable alternative to plastic. Promoting nature-oriented farming also contributes to nature conservation. The government can set a good example by managing its own land well. When putting projects out for tender, biodiversity can become an explicit part of the procurement criteria, for example in large construction and infrastructure projects.

With this approach, Belgium can strengthen its economic standing, conserve valuable natural resources and play its part in the shift to a more efficient and sustainable economic model.

“Bij Carmeuse werken we elke dag in en met de natuur. We integreren biodiversiteit doorheen de hele productiecyclus: van slim beheer tijdens exploitatie tot het creëren van nieuwe natuur nadien. Onze sites worden unieke biotopen voor zeldzame en pionierssoorten, met lokaal maatwerk afgestemd op klimaat en omgeving. Alleen al in 2023 plantten we ruim 50.000 bomen in Europa.”
